Twitter makes it easier to extend that small gesture of kindness by allowing you to buy someone a coffee no matter what time zone they’re in.

Starbucks has launched a program, “Tweet A Coffee,” allowing caffeine addicts to link their Starbucks account to Twitter. Tweet the following “@Tweetacoffee to [your friend’s Twitter handle]” and poof, you’re friend receives a $5 gift card to Starbucks.  This is redeemed via mobile at any Starbucks. This is great news as it leverages social and mobile media to sell more coffees. Sounds fantastic!

Starbucks Tweet A Coffee FAQ

What are the limitations for the Starbucks Tweet a Coffee program?

Right now this new feature is only available in the US and only for purchases of $5. Both the sender and receiver of the coffee must have a Twitter account.

What is the privacy policy for Tweet a Coffee?

Starbucks is collecting lots of BOTH the sender’s and recipient’s personal data. They will collect your birthday, phone number, the frequency and location of your Starbucks purchases, and much more. In essence, by Tweeting a coffee to a friend, you potentially tell Starbucks who you are, where you live, who your friends are, what type of coffee you drink and where you drink it. To Starbucks’ cred, they do not sell this information.

How do I know my Tweet a Coffee gift was received?

As the coffee gifter, you’ll know your purchase went through in two ways: 1) You’ll receive an emailed receipt (to the email address associated with your Twitter account). 2) @TweetACoffee will tweet at both you and your lucky coffee recipient letting him or her know you purchased the orange mocha Frappuccino!
