Pinterest is on a roll! In 2014, the social media platform has already announced that they will now be supporting GIFs, and FSCers, along with the rest of the world, rejoiced. Just last week Pinterest also announced the addition of Rich Pins, which sort recipe Pins into in-depth categories that allow foodies to search and share Pins based on their cuisine type or ingredients used.

But that’s not all! On Monday, the social media platform unveiled their newest update: Interests.

In addition to viewing what’s popular or what your friends have Pinned, Pinterest analyzes what you’ve pinned and shows you Pins based on those interests.

After taking some time to read about and understand this new feature, here are my thoughts.

Pinterest’s New Feature: Interests

  • I really love how Pinterest is making it easier to view Pins that you may not have even known you were looking for. I may have never thought to search for kale pictures, but now I’ve entered a whole new world … of kale Pins!
  • Will this eventually become a feature on the homepage? I’d almost rather see a homepage of Pins tailored to my interests than the 1,000 wedding dress Pins that my peers have posted, but then again, seeing what your friends Pin is great way to explore new interests. I’m interested to see how this will change the experience.
  • For those Pinners who utilize the platform more for function than for fun, this is a great way to easily seek out exactly what you’re looking for.
  • This feature will be particularly great for brands with a Pinterest presence, enabling them to easily find and Re-Pin a variety of relevant content that’s Pinned by their community.
  • How will this enhance the individual user’s interaction with brand Pins? Will, for example, “Zatarain’s” appear as a category if a user has interacted with Zatarain’s Pinterest presence in the past, or will Pinterest register this as more of a general interest in rice mixes or Southern cuisine? I’m curious to see how this pans out.

Pinterest is working to make the user experience on their platform as individualized as possible, which I can’t help but appreciate. I’m definitely excited to see how this feature improves over time!
